Application of gaseous detectors for environmental monitoring and in health alarm systems
Vladimir Peskov
Gaseous detectors of photons and charged particles due to their features such as high gas gains, good
position and energy resolutions and low cost per unit of sensitive area are widely used in various high
energy physics and astrophysics experiments. We will describe the latest developments in gaseous
detectors, including recently invented micropattern detectors, which allow to extend their applications
beyond the traditional ones. Our focus will be on detector systems oriented on environmental monitoring
and health alarm systems, which include highly sensitive detectors of flames, smoke and dangerous gases,
detectors of alpha emitting elements, including Rn and Po, and ultraviolet hyperspectroscopes. Encouraging
results obtained with these systems in laboratory will be presented. The projects for using these
detectors for early detection of bush and forest fires, prediction of earthquakes and for monitoring the pollution
of earth and natural water reservoirs will be discussed. Finally, other interesting applications of
gaseous
detectors will be briefly reviewed, for example in low dose x-ray scanners for medicine and home-land
security.
