I present a detailed numerical study of twisted Eguchi-Kawai reduced models in four dimensions, which provides evidence for the possible spontaneous breaking of the {Z_N}4 symmetry for large enough N. I discuss how this affects the equivalence of these models with the planar limit of SU(N) gauge theories.
