What is happening in dark matter, cosmology and astrophysics

This week's dark-matter conversation is dominated by theoretical attempts to explain the LUX-ZEPLIN high-energy nuclear-recoil candidate, with proposals ranging from inelastic dark matter to an atmospheric-neutrino origin. In cosmology, DESI-era measurements keep feeding the debate over whether dark energy is a simple cosmological constant or evolves with time, while JWST continues to deliver new probes of the early Universe and of dark matter's small-scale behaviour.

Two galaxy clusters after a collision: the hot gas, seen in X-rays, was slowed by the impact, while most of the mass — mapped through gravitational lensing — moved on with the galaxies.

LUX-ZEPLIN recoil candidate

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment has reported a single nuclear-recoil event at 248±23(stat)±23(sys) keV in a 2.84 tonne-year exposure, with a local significance of 3.4σ. The unusually high recoil energy is difficult to accommodate within standard elastic weakly-interacting-massive-particle scattering. This has triggered a wave of theoretical work exploring inelastic (endothermic) dark matter, whose kinematic threshold naturally suppresses low-energy recoils and shifts the signal to higher energy.

Interpreting the LZ event

Several groups have proposed distinct explanations for the LZ candidate. One framework attributes it to atmospheric neutrinos upscattering to a heavier neutral state, which would also predict neutral-current events in neutrino experiments. Another models the recoil via the elastic form factor of a composite dark-matter baryon built from several dark quarks, without invoking an inelastic mass splitting. A third study examines how future colliders, including the FCC-hh and a muon collider, could test an electroweak-multiplet dark-matter interpretation beyond the reach of the LHC.

MAGGIE gravitational-wave detector

MAGGIE (Magnetic Gravitational wave Induction Experiment) has been proposed as the first lumped-element high-frequency gravitational-wave detector in Europe. It adapts axion-haloscope technology, using a 14 T solenoidal magnet at the University of Hamburg, to search for the electromagnetic currents that gravitational waves can induce in external magnetic fields, targeting the kHz-MHz band.

DESI transient pipeline

A new pipeline called DETECT cross-matches new transient alerts from the Transient Name Server against the 22 million spectra of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) archive, placing each transient in a distance-informed context within about an hour. Host galaxies are associated using a directional-light-radius rule calibrated on thousands of supernovae with known redshifts, addressing the fact that spectra are obtained for only a small fraction of the thousands of transients reported each month.

Dark energy on trial

A Nature Astronomy Perspective lays out both sides of the ongoing debate over whether dark energy is a cosmological constant or a dynamical component, a question sharpened by recent late-time measurements. The piece sets out the questions that still need to be addressed as more data arrive.

JWST and early baryon cycling

Deep JWST spectra of three galaxies seen within the Universe's first 700 million years have revealed blueshifted, chemically enriched gas. This provides evidence that the cycling of baryons between galaxies and their surroundings began earlier than previously established, before the midpoint of cosmic reionization.

Fermi-LAT hard-source catalog

The Fermi-LAT collaboration has released the Fourth Catalog of Hard Fermi-LAT Sources (4FHL), covering 16 years of data and 673 objects detected between 50 GeV and 2 TeV. Sensitivity and localization improve by roughly a factor of two over the previous 2FHL catalog, with photon statistics nearly doubling and enabling more detailed studies of the faintest sources.

CTAO blazar monitoring

The Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory's AGN key science project is developing its long-term monitoring strategy for blazars, using a simulation-based framework to compare candidate observing strategies via the statistical distribution of source flux. The aim is to define an optimal observing cadence for the programme.

Using 28 quadruple-image strong gravitational lenses observed by JWST, this study measures halo properties to constrain the free-streaming length of dark matter, a quantity tied to the particle's mass and production mechanism. By simultaneously reconstructing extended lensed arcs together with image positions and magnifications, the analysis improves sensitivity to small perturbing halos and rules out deviations from cold-dark-matter predictions on the smallest scales probed, of direct interest to anyone testing warm or other non-cold dark-matter scenarios.

This paper measures the Solar System's kinematic dipole using a redshift-dipole method applied to DESI DR1, testing the 'cosmic dipole tension' between the velocity inferred from the CMB dipole and that inferred from large-scale-structure number counts. The redshift-dipole estimator is less sensitive to imaging systematics and selection-function uncertainties than traditional number-count measurements, offering a cleaner test of the cosmological principle.

Motivated by DESI DR2's geometrical preference for departures from ΛCDM, this paper asks whether the same late-time distance data could instead be absorbed by a redshift-dependent effective speed of light, parametrised by a single extra parameter. Using only late-time data, the analysis offers an alternative, non-dark-energy reading of the DESI anomaly.

Anticipating a future detection of primordial gravitational waves, this study forecasts what an expanded Simons Observatory - growing to six small-aperture telescopes by 2027 - could learn about cosmic reheating, for benchmark tensor-to-scalar ratios of r=0.0036 or r=0.01. In plateau inflation models such a detection would fix the inflationary scale and let the reheating temperature and inflaton couplings be pinned down.

This paper models the Newtonian (gravity-gradient) noise of acoustic origin in the Virgo gravitational-wave detector, one of the vibroacoustic noise sources limiting sensitivity at low frequency. Understanding and mitigating this noise matters for current detector upgrades and for the design of next-generation instruments such as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer.

Using DESI BAO DR2 together with Pantheon+ supernovae and Planck CMB distance priors, this analysis examines the w0waCDM model with two complementary redshift-cut strategies to see which part of the data drives the apparent preference for dynamical dark energy over ΛCDM. The authors find the most noticeable shifts occur when BAO and supernova data around z~0.4-0.8 are included, helping to localise the origin of the DESI dark-energy anomaly.
